Samia Haq, Liberal Democrat Leader of Oadby and Wigston Borough Council writes:

The Conservative run County Council today has applied to the government to cancel the county elections in an attempt to power grab, and planning to submit a proposal for a Unitary County.

The devolution process was started by the Tories to create giant, far removed councils, now the autocratic Labour Government is following up their agenda and wants to abolish the districts and boroughs which have existed since 1974. This will remove democracy from the hearts of town and communities, create huge democratic deficit, and goes against the very principle of devolution and white paper.

Let’s not forget the whole problem was created by the failure of Conservative government to fund local authorities properly and now Labour government is merging councils in a cost cutting exercise.

We have written to the Government expressing our deep disappointment and concerns the way whole process has been conducted. We  have asked our MP to work with us but not had a reply as yet.

Let’s get one thing straight Oadby and Wigston is not up for grabs!

We will fight to save our borough from both power hungry County Conservatives and City Labour.

Join us in our bid to save our Borough! Sign the petition to stop Leicester's Mayor taking over Oadby and Wigston.
