Stop Leicester's takeover of Oadby, Wigston and South Wigston
Our area has a long history of distinct identity from neighbouring Leicester and has remained separate from the city since the Borough of Oadby and Wigston was created over 50 years ago.
Labour want to abolish the Borough and District Councils and replace them with huge, remote councils of about half a million people each.
The Conservatives at County Hall want to cancel local elections this year - a move that shows they support Labour's plans to concentrate power in sprawling super councils without due consideration of history, geography or community.
To make this work, Oadby, Wigston and South Wigston is likely to end up being taken over by Leicester. Local Liberal Democrats oppose this because:
- The changes will cost money;
- It would mean higher Council Tax for local residents (Leicester's Council tax is over 3% higher than Oadby and Wigston's - nearly £70 extra for a Band D property for 24/25);
- Local decision-making will be taken away from our area into a single unwieldy council.
It's crucial that democracy and decision-making stay local to our area and are not made by a remote Labour Mayor in Leicester Town Hall.
Sign the petition to the Minster for Local Government to stop Leicester's Mayor taking over Oadby and Wigston.
Stop Leicester's takeover of Oadby, Wigston and South Wigston
We the undersigned oppose any take-over of Oadby and Wigston by Leicester's Mayor
